Seeing God: My First Profound Grace Experience

Hello, everyone! I'm Constance Messmer, a leader in spiritual and personal evolution. Today, I want to share with you one of the very first, most powerful, spiritual experiences that I ever had in my life. It was a moment of Divine Grace that I did not even realize was happening at the time.

The Sacraments of Faith

I was born and raised into the Roman Catholic faith. In the Catholic faith, there are seven sacraments that are considered milestones as part of our religious journey. These sacraments are religious ceremonies that impart Divine Grace. They are outward signs of an inward grace experience.

Here is the full audio file with video of this blog. This blog is just the highlights.

Baptism

Baptism is the first sacrament of Christian initiation. It is the purification and sanctification by Holy water and the Word. This sacrament is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments.

These are my lovely godparents, Trish and Bill. They got married the year after this photo was taken. That’s me, the baby, just after my church Baptism. Don’t mind the date; it was really 1964 - Time bending at an early age! Haha!

 Reconciliation (Penance)

The sacrament of Reconciliation is also known as Penance and Confession, among other names. The primary purpose of this sacrament is to reconcile a person with God. Through Reconciliation, we acknowledge our sins, express our sorrow in a contrite manner, receive forgiveness, make reparation for what we have done, and resolve to do better in the future.

Me, our priest, and my best chum lining up for a photo op at my First Communion. The date was really 1971. Again, I a blip in time. Haha!

First Holy Communion

First Holy Communion, also known as the Eucharist, which means thanksgiving, is the heart and the summit of the Church's life. Traditionally people born into the Catholic Faith make their First Communion around age seven.

Confirmation

Confirmation is the next sacrament of Christian initiation. It is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit. It strengthens the baptized and obliges them more firmly to be witnesses of Christ by word and deed.

Holy Orders

Holy Orders is the sacrament by which a man is made a bishop, a priest, or a deacon. Men are ordained into one of these three orders by the bishop through the laying on of hands.

Matrimony

Matrimony, or Marriage, is a sacrament and a vocation. It is a public sign that one gives oneself totally to this other person. It is also a public statement about God: the loving union of husband and wife speaks of family values and also God's values.

Anointing of the Sick

The Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament that is offered to those who are seriously ill, undergoing surgery, or are at the point of death. The sacrament provides grace for the journey through this challenging time.

The Power of Reconciliation

The sacrament that I want to tell you about was my first reconciliation. This happens around age seven in Catholicism. It's a time when we confess our sins and receive absolution, cleansing us and making us fresh and new.

My First Reconciliation and First Communion Photo. Don’t mind the date, photo development delay/time warp. Probably because back then, you had to actually take the film to get developed and go back to pick up the prints. Honest!

A Profound Experience of Grace

During my first Reconciliation, I had a profound experience of God’s Grace. As the priest absolved me of my sins, the whole room lit up with the brightest ever light. It was so bright that I opened my eyes… to complete darkness. I didn’t understand; I thought someone had turned on the confessional lights, but the room was dark. The light that had poured over me was a moment of Divine Grace that I didn't fully understand until decades later.

The Light of God was so immense, this picture doesn’t do it justice. It was actually unbelievable and blinding.

The Grace of God in Our Lives

I believe that we can experience the Grace of God in our lives in many ways. Sometimes, it's through a powerful spiritual experience like my First Reconciliation. Other times, it's through the subtle nudges and guidance we receive as we navigate our lives.

Inviting Grace into Our Lives

I invite you to realize where in your life you may be missing the mark and where you want to do better. Ask God's advice and lean into it. Be okay with having powerful spiritual experiences and hearing the voice that guides you towards truth and healing. This is grace, a gift we can give each other, and a gift definitely bestowed by God.

God’s Grace is available to everyone, and it can be a powerful experience at that!
